For example, there are more than 28,000 PGA Professionals who have dedicated their careers to managing, teaching and growing the game of golf. PGA Professionals are trained and certified in golf instruction and the business and professional skills necessary to manage entire facilities including, budgeting and fiscal management, marketing and promotions, retail operations, personnel management, communication skills, food and beverage operations and course maintenance. PGA Professionals can serve many roles such as: Chief Operating Officer, General Manager, Project Manager, Director of Golf, Head Golf Professional, Director of Instruction, or Teaching Professional. A PGA Professional has the expertise to successfully manage a business while growing the game of golf and making it enjoyable for all.
Many PGA Professionals have also grown to prominence in corporate and association management as well as influential business owners in the industry.
To become a PGA Professional, a person must complete extensive training through work study and attending classes held at the newly completed PGA Education Center in Port St. Lucie, Florida. The construction of this building has allowed for learning to take place in an educational environment while enjoying certain synergies, with the PGA Learning Center right next door. A person can also enroll in one of the PGA’s Professional Golf Management Programs at any of the fourteen PGA accredited universities. If you enjoy working with the environment and have a love for the game, another career opportunity in golf is working in agronomy to create and maintain golf courses. There are thousands of members of the Golf Course Superintendent's Association of America who ensure that golf courses are in excellent condition for the nation's more than 25 million golfers. These men and women set the maintenance standards at most facilities and are trained in budgeting, long-range turf planning, irrigation systems, and must possess excellent communication skills to effectively work with the owner or general manager of a facility.
